The Feast of the Seven Fishes

Guest Post by Roger

This year we are going to try Fran’s family Christmas tradition – the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This is an Italian Christmas tradition, based upon the practice of abstinence from eating meat  at various times, Christmas Eve being one of these times.  We have been preparing a sort of Swedish Christmas Eve dinner for 25 years.  It’s time to try something new (for me) even though this is an old tradition.  Interestingly, my Swedish relatives are delighted that we are incorporating more “fisk” in our tradition.

So this year, our Christmas Eve menu will include the following dishes:

Shrimp scampi

Crab Cakes

Fish Chowder

Pasta in white clam sauce

Broiled Tilapia Parmesan

Octopus Salad

Sill (Marinated Herring, and this is Swedish!)

We have purchased the sill and the octopus salad (from a nice Italian food store) but will make the other dishes.  Fortunately, there will be six of us to make and consume all of this food. To me, a feast means that there are plenty of people there.  The more, the merrier the celebration!

I will have three wines and some aquavit with this feast.  The aquavit is traditional in accompanying sill.  The wines will cover the different types of fish as well as the different tastes of the womenfolk for wine.  The wines will be Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio.  I am really excited about this Feast!

Buon appetito and Merry Christmas to all from our house to yours…
