Ham and Cheese Sliders

Having a crowd over to watch the Super Bowl?  Here’s an easy peasy, not to mention very delicious, recipe to feed your football fan friends and family. You’ve probably seen lots of recipes on the internet for these mouth-watering ham and cheese sliders.   Sometimes they’re called tailgate or funeral sliders as they’re meant to feed a crowd.  No matter what you call them, you don’t need to wait for a football game or a funeral to make them.

They are super easy to make as you just assemble the sandwiches with Hawaiian rolls, deli ham, and Swiss cheese.  The only work, if you want to call it that, is mixing the ingredients for the tangy honey mustard glaze which you pour over the top of the sandwiches before baking.  After baking, you should serve the sliders immediately as they are best warm.

You may not be happy with whichever team wins the Super Bowl, but I guarantee that you’ll be happy with these delicious sliders!

Fran’s Notes

This recipe will feed four hungry people, so that you will need to double it if you have more than that to feed.  I found that the men in my family ate 3 sandwich rolls as a serving while the women ate 2 rolls each.  I made it easy on myself and had cole slaw, potato chips, and pickles to go along with the sliders.

Ingredients

  • One 12-count package Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
  • 3/4 lb. deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 6 to 8 large slices of thinly sliced Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbl. unsalted butter, melted
  • 1⁄4 cup honey
  • 3 tbl. Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbl. poppy seeds
  • 1 tbl. dried minced onion

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350° F.  Lightly spray a 9×13” baking pan with cooking spray.  Make sure to use a baking pan with deep sides as you need to cover the dish with aluminum foil.  A standard 9×13” baking pan is too shallow as the rolls will be higher than the sides which means the topping will transfer to the aluminum foil.  You don’t want to lose a single drop of the delicious topping to the foil!  I used a deep lasagna pan which worked out very nicely.  My rolls didn’t touch the sides of the lasagna pan which was perfectly fine, so don’t worry if yours don’t either.

With a large serrated knife, cut the buns in half through the middle, so you have the tops together and the bottoms together.  Do not separate individual buns for easy assembly.

Place the bottom buns open-faced in the prepared pan (with deep sides as mentioned above).

Arrange half the deli meat in a single layer on top of the bottom buns.  Next, place a layer of Swiss cheese and then top with the remaining ham slices.  Cover with the tops of the buns.  Set aside.

In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, honey, Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, and dried onion flakes.  Pour evenly over the top of the prepared sandwiches.  Some of the mixture will pool around the rolls, and that’s ok.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake covered for about 25 minutes, or until the cheese has melted.

Uncover and cook for another 3 minutes or until the tops have slightly browned.

Remove the baking dish from the oven and cut into individual sliders.  Serve immediately. Sliders are best when warm.
